Service Learning

The Rev. Betsy Carmody

The impact of service is really twofold. There is the difference that a student will see on the ground by work done with their hands and minds alongside those they are serving, but then there are the internal impacts. By stepping outside their contexts and into places filled with more questions than answers, students meet others whose faces and names personify the great needs of our world both far and near. Gone is the ability to generalize and stereotype and what was once abstract becomes personal.

With the regular pace of school work and the demands of rigorous athletic and residential life programs, not to mention flourishing arts and culture offerings, it is easy to lose sight of the incredible privileges that come from being a student at EHS.

Despite their very full schedules, many students believe that a vitally important part of our life together is the chance to serve those who are in need. Whether it is through feeding programs, gleaning, tutoring, advocacy, fundraising, or construction, many students find that work serving the community outside the Episcopal gates is an essential and balancing component of their EHS experience.
