Vienna: Summer Break
Since 1995, Episcopal High School has partnered with Theresianum Academy in Vienna, Austria, on a student international exchange program. This exchange occurs every other year and is open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. There is no language requirement, though students with German experience will be expected to use their skills! Exchanges occur in odd numbered years (2023, 2025, etc.).
The program fosters personal relationships between the students of EHS and the Theresianum; immerses EHS students in the German language in its natural context in German-speaking Europe; and provides EHS students with an understanding of the greater historical importance of Austria within the context of Europe and European history.
Austrian students visit EHS during the spring semester. After the end of school in June, EHS students will travel to Vienna with German Teacher Hannah Ellington '03 and stay with their Austrian exchange partner and family at their home.
Students will attend classes at the Theresianum Academy each morning, immersing themselves in both the language and culture. In the afternoons and evenings, they’ll explore Vienna, from its grand palaces to bustling cafés, and vibrant art districts. The group will also embark on a day trip to Salzburg, a city famed for its beautifully preserved historic center, as well as its legacy as the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for The Sound of Music. The itinerary includes opportunities for hiking, visiting renowned museums, savoring Austrian cuisine, and enjoying live music. Each program also features a unique, teacher-designed “adventure,” customized to each student’s interests and German language skills (from absolute beginner to advanced).
