Girls Varsity Basketball Defeats Longstanding Rival

EHS has a long-standing rivalry with this ISL opponent, and Tuesday evening's contest followed suit with our previous meetings.

Although Maret struck first with a layup in transition, the Maroon responded by blanking their opponent with a 10-0 run in the opening minutes. The trio of Maya Goree '18, Lexi Weger '18, and Kailyn Shepherd '19 befuddled the Frogs on both ends of the floor, and after eight minutes of competition, Episcopal led 17-4. As all good teams will do, Maret stormed back in the second stanza by managing 10 unanswered points and upping their half court pressure. The home team called a time out, switched defensive looks, and recommitted to executing on offense. This timeout paid dividends in the closing minutes of the second. A layup by Sophie Singletary '18 just before the halftime buzzer extended the team's lead to nine.

Episcopal did a phenomenal job controlling the tempo of the game in the second half thanks, in large part, to Brooks Buyck '17. She was able to not only push the ball when there were openings in transition, but she was also at the helm of our exceptional half court execution. The team's defensive efforts were led by Singletary and Shepherd, managing four steals apiece, while the glass was protected by LB Campagna '17 and Weger, who combined for 16 rebounds. Maret staged a valiant comeback in the final quarter, but the Maroon remained poised to hold on to the 43-36 win.
