Stuart T. Saunders, Jr. ’60

Stuart Saunders is a legend at Episcopal High School, who made a lasting impression on many classmates, schoolmates, teachers, coaches, and friends. Stuart was a football lineman, wrestler, and track and field thrower. In fact, he often competed in wrestling and winter track meets during the same season. Stuart earned All-Metropolitan and All-State honors in football and the team only lost one game in each of his two final seasons on the Hill. During his five years, the varsity football team had an overall record of 34-7-4, including four wins out of five games against Woodberry.

Stuart was a three-sport captain, and he was known for his leadership, sportsmanship, and character—both on the field and off. Stuart was a member of the Honor Committee, Head Waiter, and Head Monitor, and he was the president of the Glee Club and the Choir. The EHS News reported following the 1960 track season, “Alternate Captain Stuart Saunders, of Roanoke, was an inspirational leader on the track as he was in all phases of school life.”
