EHS Hosts Kids' Charity Triathlon to Support Families Caring for Children With Cancer
For the third straight year, Episcopal hosted and helped run a kids’ charity triathlon in September, with more than 150 in the EHS community — students, faculty, and staff — turning out as volunteers.
The 10-year old Just Tryan It race raises funds to support families struggling financially as they care for and get treatments for a child with cancer. The group covers such expenses as transportation costs for treatments, home care and palliative care, and everyday needs such as utility bills.
“The impact of Just Tryan It is always beyond what I can imagine. At its core, the organization changes the game for families at the worst time in their lives,” said The Rev. Betsy Carmody Gonzalez, Service Learning Coordinator, “and then I see the impact on our Episcopal students of the spirit of the racers, some of whom are survivors, and their families. From the finish line to a final treatment, a message of resilience rules the day and the lives of these families.”
This year, over 150 racers ages 6-14 took part in the event, which raised more than $52,000. They swam in the Episcopal pool, biked the roads of campus and ran on our fields and cross country course. More than a dozen children of faculty competed in the race, raising nearly $10,000 alone.
Chineme Agulanna ’20 won the event’s Ken Caputo Volunteer Service award. “Chineme was wonderful. He ran the course at least three times cheering kids on the whole way,” said Anne Carver, a run captain. Receiving honorable mention for the award were Gilbert Amason '20 (Caputo winner in 2017), Nia Beane '21, Regan Simmons '21, and Arman Singh ’20.
