Jimmy Flippen was undefeated in match play his entire EHS career. His ambition and dedication on the course led to his earning All-IAC during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. As an upperclassman, he was All-Met, received the William M. Boothe award, and was selected as the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Athlete of the Year for golf. In 1990, he was named the VSGA Junior Golfer of the Year. “Jimmy was simply the most focused, committed golfer to have ever worn the Maroon and Black,” Whit Morgan, head golf coach said. “Every single weekend, even in awful weather, you could find Jimmy on the Front Drive with a shag bag and a wedge.”
At the University of Virginia, Flippen was named the NCAA Freshman of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, All American, and All-ACC in 1992. He was the first golfer to be NCAA and ACC rookie of the year in the same season. He also holds the UVA record for the largest margin of victory. “Jimmy’s legendary drive and focus are the reasons you can still find his name in the record books of both EHS and UVA,” Morgan said.
Flippen now plays in the Professional Golf Association and remains a lifelong competitor who played with the likes of David Duval, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. In 2016, he was the Middle Atlantic Section PGA Player of the Year after winning its Section Championship, Head Pro Championship, and Players Cup. During his lengthy career, he spent sixteen years teaching, club fitting, and club repairing –– including eight years as the head golf coach for Westover Christian Academy in Danville, Va.
