With Courage We Will...Inspire achievement through rigor and wellness.
We will create opportunities for students and faculty to thrive through an intentional and inspirational balance of ambitious pursuits and healthy lifestyles.
At Episcopal, we believe that health and wellness are critical to the achievement of ambitious pursuits. Students thrive in an environment that provides balance, with intentional spaces and opportunities that allow students to stretch, reflect, succeed, and be their best selves in all areas of school life.
Adolescent care has changed dramatically in recent years with greater complexity and more utilization of services. Episcopal has emerged as a pioneer in the care of students, with wellness initiatives and education about mental health, sleep hygiene, healthy relationships, the dangers of substance use, and more. All of these initiatives provide students the opportunity to learn and practice the skills that will help them take care of themselves and their peers during their time on the Hill and, indeed, throughout their lives.
The first-floor medical facility features comprehensive treatment and clinical work areas, four examination rooms, a dispensary, observation and overnight rooms, and separate, comfortable waiting areas for sick and well patients.
The J.W. Couch Counseling Center provides dedicated space for the School’s counselors with spacious, comfortable offices for meeting with students, a recovery room, and flex offices for use by visiting psychiatrists and therapists.
During their time at EHS, 75% of the student body will use some aspect of the counseling center, from a drop-by meeting, to regular therapy, reflective of national trends and a promising move away from the stigma once associated with seeking such help.
The Inman Family Conference Room provides a beautiful and bright space for meetings and collaborative work and is regularly utilized by faculty, staff, and students alike.
Providing a dedicated space for the Community Wellness Coordinator, who teaches health classes, plans wellness programs, and supports student organizations, the second floor spaces are now the hub for Episcopal’s burgeoning wellness programming. The multi-purpose space serves as a classroom, a yoga studio, a meeting space, and more. Increasingly student leaders promote and facilitate events such as sleep hygiene boot camps, body image awareness workshops, and weekly yoga classes. Episcopal students are breaking stereotypes about mental health and creating a school culture where students participate in skill-building programs and proactively seek support from teachers and healthcare professionals before they are in crisis.

The new, light-filled building supports holistic health, wellness, and success in an innovative, supportive, and balanced sanctuary that serves all students.
Simone and Tench Coxe ’76 are the lead donors for the new center and requested that the building be named in honor of Tench’s EHS roommate, William “Boota” deButts ’76, his wife, Shelley, as well as his father, Hunter deButts ’47.
