Over the past few years, the rivalry between Episcopal and Collegiate has grown intensely as the teams battle each year for a win — rarely by more than a few goals. This year proved to be no different.
Collegiate caught the Maroon on their heels with a quick goal in the first minute to open the game, but the Maroon began to find their stride and with 10 minutes left in the half, the teams were tied up at 4-4. A late first half run by Collegiate gave them an 8-4 lead heading into the halftime break. Collegiate would continue to control the pace of the game and maintain a lead throughout the second half, and with only 4:38 left to play, Episcopal called a timeout down 7-12. With renewed energy and commitment to each other and our game, the girls came out of the timeout and went on a dominant run - winning draws, pushing the pace in transition, causing turnovers on the defensive end and finding the back of the net FOUR times to bring the score to 11-12. This late game surge forced Collegiate to call a timeout with only 5 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, this late game was a too little too late, and the final horn sounded with the Maroon down 11-12.
Despite two tough, close losses in VISAA play, this team has their heads high and is looking ahead to this week as we have three more important state games against Bishop O’Connell, Flint Hill and St. Catherine’s. The hard work, love for each other, desire to get better, and selflessness of this year’s squad has positioned the team for an impressive run as the competition continues.
