The girls' basketball team stood toe to toe with a Northern Virginia goliath on Thursday evening, and although the outcome did not favor the Maroon, there were many positives the team took away from the contest.
Bishop Ireton, currently ranked fifth in the state, came out of the gates on fire. The team hit several deep threes and took an early 18-9 lead. EHS also struggled to break the full-court pressure applied by the Cardinals and registered eight turnovers in the first stanza alone.
In the second quarter, Episcopal showcased immense grit and spirit; the team buckled down defensively and held the visitors to just two points. On the other end of the floor, EHS began to find fluidity. Sophie Singletary's layup at the 6:33 mark sparked an 11-0 run in favor of the Maroon. With twelve seconds remaining, a Kailyn Shepherd offensive rebound led to a Maya Goree buzzer-beating three pointer to tie the game at half.
When the two teams returned from their respective locker rooms, BI proved once again why they are one of the toughest programs in the state. A slew of drive-and-dish opportunities led to easy points in the paint for the Cardinals. Despite a valiant comeback attempt in the final stanza, the damage had already been done. EHS dropped the decision by a final score of 48-36.
