Lee Massey McLaughlin, Coach

Mr. McLaughlin served as head football coach for nine years at Episcopal and had a record of 53 wins, 20 losses, and 7 ties. His teams were Prep League champions in 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1955. The 1953 team, which was undefeated and untied, was ranked No. 1 in the Metro area by The
Washington Post. His 1955 squad was ranked No.2. The Alexandria Sportsman's Club selected "Coach Mac" as Coach of the Year in 1956. His teams won several Alexandria City championships, and he never lost to Woodberry as head coach. Many of his players received local and state awards, including EHS Hall of Famers Jack Dilweg '49, Bill Weston '52, Jay Corson '53, and Fletcher Carter '54.

As a student, Mr. McLaughlin was co-captain of the football and track teams at the University of Virginia and was a third team All-American in football. He played one year of professional football for the Green Bay Packers. He left EHS to become the head football coach at Washington & Lee University, where he achieved great success. His 1961 team was recognized as the Outstanding Small College Team in America. He is a member of the W&L Hall of Fame.
