The tremendous speed of Oran Rowe gave him a name as the best sprinter in the area and rendered him a valuable wide receiver for the varsity football team. Alexandria Sportsman’s Club presented him with the Track Award in 1973 and 1974. Mr. Rowe was co-captain of the track team his junior and senior years and a two-time recipient of the Beaudric L. Howell Medal. He set ten school records, including fastest times in the 60-yard dash, the 100-yard dash, the 300-yard dash, the 440-yard run, and the 880-yard team relay. Mr. Rowe also broke the 38-year old record set by Flick Hoxton ’38 in the 440 with a time of 49.8 seconds. Only two second place finishes as a freshman marred his otherwise perfect winning streak in four years at EHS.
